The vanilla pod is frequently referred to as the bean. The pods are picked when they are still not ripe, and then plunged into hot water and laid out to dry for anywhere from two to six months. The vanilla pod contains thousands of tiny black seeds.
The inside is full of tiny, tiny seeds that we call seeds. When you're making something that calls for vanilla beans, you want to use the whole thing. However, it helps to split and open the pod, and then scrape the seeds out, so they can easily disburse in what you're mixing. Put the bean on a cutting surface.
